“Real bands save fans, real fans
save bands”- Michael Clifford
This quote has always stricken me
to the core and leaves me with an indescribable feeling. While it is
exceptionally true in many ways not only for bands, but for other solo artists
as well, people don’t really think about things in this way.
If you were to open a new tab and
go on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or even my other blog you would be able to see
someone saying that a band or artist saved their life. Every person who likes
music has become attached to a band or artist in one way or another. Granted
some might get more attached than others, but there is always a connection with
a band (or artist). That is of course unless someone doesn’t like music at all
which I don’t think is possible. When people get so attached to them they
become entirely involved in that artists life even if they don’t personally
know them or have even talked to them online or face to face.
What people don’t realize is how
hard the musicians have it. They are constantly away from home and their
families, they’re always in the lime light, they never have privacy and they
are always scrutinized for everything that they do. They probably feel
depressed and self-conscious too, but people don’t really see that. Singers,
while extremely talented are always scrutinized, people also see them as indestructible
beings that take everything that is thrown at them with a smile and just brush
it off. They can’t always do that. They also have to put up this image for
their fans, the press, and everyone else. This definitely takes its toll on
them and they can only take so much.
While fans are important to buy
CDs, merchandise, and concert tickets they also need to be there for the
musician in other ways. For most true fans this isn’t hard to give everything they have to these people.
